It's great to bring people together for a dinner. Here in New York everyone goes out for dinner with friends, but we on the other hand love having people over and this is how we do it.

Voila - The Table - Lighting the candles is a great way to let people know dinner is almost served.

We're taking a break from talking about clothes to share our love of hosting, how we do it, and what we’ve learned over the years. It’s never easy - it’s lots of work and a lot of fun. In the last few weeks, we’ve hosted several friends and a large group for Passover. No matter the size, it’s hard to manage without a plan. So here’s how we do it….

MENU PLANNING

The first consideration is the dietary restrictions. Do we have a vegetarian? Do we have someone who doesn’t eat onion or garlic? Is someone gluten-free? You have to ask. With that knowledge, I start planning the menu, focusing on what’s in season at the farmer's market. I always shop at the Grand Army Plaza market on Saturday mornings (get there early, 8am, so you don’t have to deal with lines, children, or dogs. Though we love most dogs and children - we love them less at the market while shopping). The menu can be simple. Don’t overcomplicate or try to overachieve. And most importantly, cook everything before your guests arrive. Cooking while entertaining guests is too easy a way to lose the plot.
